Video Wins Award for Collaboration in Emergency Management
Dennis Kenny
The International Association of Emergency Managers has recognized the Just in Case video with its 2006 Partnerships for Preparedness award. This award is given annually for outstanding public/private collaboration in the field of emergency management. This award recognizes, in particular, the working relationship between the City of Seattle's Office of Emergency Management and Caresource Healthcare Communications in developing the Just in Case video and companion Community Education Guide, with additional support coming from The U.S. Administration on Aging and its National Family Caregiver Support Program; The Red Cross of King and Kitsap Counties; Seattle’s Human Services Department, Aging and Disability Services Division; the Seattle-King County Advisory Council on Aging and Disability Services; and the authors of the book Aging in Stride, Chris Fordyce, Liz Oettinger, and myself.
Thanks to the generous support of the U.S. Administration on Aging, this entire program is now available in Spanish as well as English. The package has been shipped all over the U.S. Quantity purchases by other community partners, including the City of San Antonio, the Health Care Association of New Jersey, and Merrill Gardens Retirement Communities, have strengthened distribution. Response to free consumer access to the resources online has been wonderful. There have been over 18,000 downloads from www.AgingInStride.org—and that doesn't include downloads of the same resources at www.AoA.gov. To access consumer resources online, please visit www.aginginstride.org/emergencyprep. If you are responsible for preparing older adults and caregivers in your community for a disaster, you can also purchase a complete community education kit on the Aging in Stride website.
